Magic of the Mind
Known variously as "mentalism," "mental magic," or "mind mysteries," this branch of performance magic focuses on the human mind and heart with such effects and illusions as seeing pictures, reading personalities, moving things, sharing thoughts or dreams, and even knowing things before they happen. Because of the realism and believability of this branch of performance magic, many entertainers include a short disclaimer at the beginning or end of their performances--for example Derren Brown, on his television series "Trick of the Mind," who explains that his effects are simply the combination of psychology, the power of suggestion, magic, and showmanship.
The recent movie The Great Buck Howard charts the career of a master of mentalism (based on the real experiences of the Amazing Kreskin) and gives a behind the scenes look at a life on the road performing magic of the mind.
Just below are pictures of the Astounding Alan performing magic of the mind in a classroom and a lecture hall in China.
